Tonight's menu...

... is chickpeas with winter vegetables and saffron. This variation on the Turkish turlu turlu substitutes winter vegetables for the mediterranean of the original recipie. A spicy, herby, hearty vegetable stew with parsnip and fennel, 2 vegetables I like but've rarely used? Lovely. ;)

I can report that this meal was a great success, more so than I'd feared it might prove. I can highly recommend this dish. ;)

Cheers Badger. Donald liked it too, and he's a more confirmed carnivore than you.

Thinking about cooking this again, I reckon I'd use fresh mint and chillis. The dried ones are convenient store cupboard solutions, but the fresh would be just so much tastier. Feeding the dish to Donald has also made me consider adding some yeast extract, which might give the flavour more meaty body. ;)

That does look good. I cook with fennel when my herb garden provides it, but it's all under six inches of leaves and snow at present so unless I want a bayleaf I'm pretty stuck.

Hi Louise. Thanks for posting here at RD/KA!, and welcome. :)

Growing your own veggies? Neat. It's nearly 30 years since I've eaten home grown vegetables. And is that "six inches of leaves and snow" really 6" snow? We had snow up here yesterday, but it wasn't warm enough for it to lie for long. It's all gone already.
cheers,
John ;)

That should've been "wasn't cold enough", naturally enough. ;)
